George Hardwick recaps Cage Warriors title win vs. Kyle Driscoll

George Hardwick and Lenny from MyMMANews sit down to talk about his recent Cage Warriors lightweight championship win.

Hardwick won his Cage Warriors lightweight championship at Cage Warriors 141 with a body shot finish in round 4.0

The Cage Warriors lightweight championship became vacant earlier this year when Joe McColgan vacated the belt due to personal matters affecting his ability to train.

George Hardwick became the 16th Cage Warriors lightweight champion inside the promotion, adding his name to a phenomenal list of fighters.

Hardwick won the belt as previously mentioned via 4th round body-shot, heading into the fight the Englishmen thought he would have a clear edge when it comes to striking but his adversary Kyle surprised him early:

“It was a good surprise. I thought he was going to shoot right off the bell, and try and cold clock me early and get me in them wrestling exchanges…and then he was jabbing me and jabbing me, and I was like, is he going to shoot after the next jab? And he didn’t.

After my nose started bleeding, in a weird way it worked in my favour. I start bleeding, he suddenly gets a lot more confident in his boxing and thought he could box with me…and probably got his plan away from his wrestling.”

Hardwick would get the finish in round 4 after a tough first three rounds:

“The first knockdown (third round), happened without any reaction I threw my shots there was no thought process it was just an immediate auto pilot shot. Then he gets back up and starts hitting me with good shots.

You’re not getting up twice from good body shots, Just as I had my stiff arm on Kyle I could feel Marc Goddard getting closer and that was in my head “it’s my belt, it is my belt” as I’m landing punches.”

What does it mean for Hardwick to have the belt around his waist?

“Everything was leading up to it. Every time I went to the gym and had a hard session or when I could have a slice of brownie or an extra little potion, I would tell myself no and wait it out and have a little less. Everything bleeds over for this moment.

It is a weird human state you always want the next thing. I have to step back sometimes and think “Oh yeah I’ve got that belt.” I’ve watched so many title fights of my favourite fighters fight for this belt.
