Gervonta Davis: My skill set suits a fighter like Gamboa
Gervonta Davis (22-0 21KOs) is set to take on Yuriorkis Gamboa on December 28th at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The fight will air on Showtime and will be a Premier Boxing Champions event.
Mayweathet Promotions and Davis held an open workout for fans and media to attend and provided some insight leading into the fight.
Gervonta Davis Ready For War
Davis feels right at home in Atlanta, Georgia. The Baltimore native also expressed his gratefulness to be able to be so active this year. “This is like my second home and it feels amazing to be here and fighting for my third time this year. I’m just excited to put on a great performance on Saturday night.”
Davis knows the task at hand. Gamboa is an Olympic gold medalist hailing from Cuba and will be one of his toughest challenges to date. Davis knows he must keep his eyes on the task at hand.
“I’m overwhelmed by all the support and the fans who came out tonight. But I still have to get the job done. All I’m worried about is getting the ‘W’. Each fight, I’m breaking records which are meant to be broken. I’m breaking them with each fight and Saturday night at State Farm Arena the fans will be the real winners.”
As mentioned earlier, Davis is focused. He believes he matches up well with the Olympian. He says,“My skill set suits a fighter like Gamboa. My mindset right now is just so focused. I know exactly what I have to do in there on Saturday night. I’m a more mature and focused fighter.”
The key to his success, Davis believes, is his team around him. “I have a great team around me,” says Davis. “Calvin is like a father to me and he’s watched me develop as a fighter and he believes this fight will bring the best out of me.”
Gervonta Davis believes he and Gamboa will bring the heat for fans on the 28th. “Gamboa’s a great fighter. The experience in the ring, I have it too. So it’s going to make for an exciting matchup and one the fans won’t want to miss. I’m must-see TV.”
Davis warns Gamboa, “I think it’s a mistake that [Gamboa] didn’t watch my last fight in July. Saturday night we’ll see just how much he’s been studying me.”
Calvin Ford, Davis’ Trainer
Calvin Ford, Gervonta Davis’ trainer, believes his fighter is the more prepared fighter.
“We are prepared for anything that [Yuriorkis] Gamboa brings us. If he wants to brawl, we’ll brawl. If he stays in there close, we’ll stay close. Whatever he dictates, we will adjust to. That is the game plan.”
Ford is ready to bring the Gervonta Davis show to the Atlanta faithful. “Atlanta boxing fans have waited a long time for this. It’s going to be a great night of boxing in Atlanta.”
Malik Hawkins, Davis’ Teammate
Gervonta Davis teammate, Malik Hawkins (17-0 10 KOs), is also ready to throw down in Atlanta. “It feels great. I’ve always wanted to fight here in Atlanta. Even as an amateur, I wanted to fight here, but I didn’t. Sad to say, but now, fighting here in Atlanta, it’s a dream come true. Fighting on my brother’s Gervonta Davis’ undercard is wonderful.”
Hawkins is ready to showcase his talent on the biggest stage he’s been on yet. “I’m bringing everything. I’ve got the total package.”
Just as Davis feels his team is the best in the world, so does Hawkins. He says, “It feels great. This is the team I started with when I first started boxing. They’ve been with me since then, and they ain’t never going nowhere. This is a lifetime contract.”
Leonard Ellerbee, Mayweather Promotions CEO
Leonard Ellerbee, Mayweather Promotions CEO, is excited to bring a fantastic night of boxing to fans of the sport in Atlanta.
“Saturday night is going to be huge for the city of Atlanta. It’s going to be a spectacle. This is something that this great city needs, something that this city has been waiting for for quite some time. And what better opportunity to bring the hottest fighter in the sport to this great city?”
Ellerbee expects the fight to be at the highest levels. While he expects Gamboa to come in his best version of himself, he thinks his fighter is the better fighter.
“I expect Gervonta to put on a terrific performance. I expect it to be a great fight. He’s fighting a guy who is going to bring it, who has nothing to lose. He has nothing to lose and he’s coming to be champion of the world. That’s Gamboa’s mindset. He asked for this fight. My knowledge is that he reached out two years ago, he wanted to fight ‘Tank.’”
Whatever the outcome may be, Ellerbee is excited for the spectacle he and Mayweather Promotions is bringing to Georgia.
“This city is buzzing, it’s a tremendous buzz. We have limited tickets available, and are expecting a sellout. The city has embraced it, and again this is great for our culture. It’s great to see the city have something to look forward to. It’s a great sporting event. You will see a number of people from all walks of life in the building Saturday night. It’s just really exciting and there’s a tremendous buzz. It’s terrific.”
