Gervonta Davis, Floyd Mayweather

Gervonta Davis to leave Mayweather Promotions in free agency???

It appears Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather’s time together may be coming to an end.

This began, in many of our eyes, due to the fact of Davis’ displeasure of his tickets being sold just one month out from his upcoming WBA title defense against Rolando Romero on May 28, 2022.

Romero is a former WBA interim lightweight champion, and never lost his belt in a fight.

That, along with the fact that his contract with Mayweather Promotions expires following this next fight of his.

This isn’t all too surprising to some, but to others, it is.

Mayweather and Davis have had their differences in the past, but have always made up and remained close through it all. Mayweather has helped Davis immensely through his career, he’s lucky to have, or have had him.

Mayweather had the following to say in regards to the upcoming match up:

“Two heavy hitters (Davis & Romero). Of course ‘Tank’ has more experience at this level at this particular time, but Rolly, he talk(s) a good game, he also fight(s) a good game because he’s undefeated. A very exciting matchup, two heavy hitters, everybody is anticipating this fight.

He continued: “Nothing lasts forever. I will always love ‘Tank’. I like him, love him, look at him like a son. He has to do what’s best for him. I feel like I’ve done a great job thus far, I mean just building him and putting him in good fights, great fights, and he’s steady growing, steady learning, and I’m proud of him.”

It’d probably be best for ‘Tank’ to stay with Mayweather in all honesty, but should he become a free agent, promoters are going to be chomping at the bit to sign this massive name.

Davis is 26-0 as a professional, 24 of those wins coming via knockout, and he’s a ten-time, three-division world champion. Romero, his opponent, is also a knockout artist, going 14-0 thus far through his career with 12 knockouts.

Should this come to fruition, should Davis leave Mayweather Promotions, where would you like to see him end up? Top Rank (Bob Arum), Golden Boy (Oscar De La Hoya), Matchroom Sport (Eddie Hearn), or somewhere else?

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
