A common question from MMA fans over the past few years have been when will the Diaz brothers return? It appeared it was close to happening with Nate Diaz scheduled to fight at UFC 230 against Dustin Poirier. While it was reported Nick Diaz was set to fight Jorge Masvidal at UFC 235 before Diaz said he wasn’t fighting.

Now, it appears the elder Diaz won’t fight again, according to longtime friend and training partner, Gilbert Melendez.

“I would love to see him come back, but last time I checked, he’s retired,” Melendez said Wednesday on Chael Sonnen’s “You’re Welcome” podcast.

However, Melendez points out that this is Nick’s choice and not because of USADA or a suspension or anything. He just doesn’t want to fight right now, but that doesn’t mean if the right fight comes up he won’t at least think about it.

“I don’t think there’s anything holding him back, except just his decision whether he wants to come back or not,” Melendez said. “He’s in shape. He’s in dang shape. … I think he’s always running and staying ready. He’s a ninja. He’s always ready.”

“If anyone could come back and do it, and stay on track and everything, it’s him,” he later added.

While Nick is unlikely to fight, it may not be the same for Nate. Although UFC President Dana White says Nate isn’t interested in fighting anymore, Melendez isn’t so sure.

“He’s training hard,” said Melendez. “His brand is huge. He’s so dang famous; the guy’s an A-lister now. Everyone knows him where I go. He’s big in the cannabis game out there and hanging out with celebrities, doing appearances. Being a real businessman out there. He has his specialties, and he’s doing good. He’s training all the time, living a good lifestyle.”

Nate Diaz was last seen in the Octagon at UFC 202 in which he lost by decision to Conor McGregor. Nick, on the other hand, last fought in January of 2015 where he fought to a no-contest against Anderson Silva.
