Gillian Robertson, Tabatha Ricci, UFC on ABC 5

Gillian Robertson vs Tabatha Ricci slated for UFC on ABC 5

UFC on ABC 5 is shaping up to be an exciting night of fights, as the Ultimate Fighting Championship continues adding stellar match ups to the event.

Headlining the event is a featherweight bout between no. 5 ranked Josh Emmett (18-3) and no. 9 ranked Ilia Topuria (13-0).

UFC on ABC 5 is to go down on June 24, 2023, live from the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.

Another exciting encounter that’s recently been added to the lineup comes in the strawweight division between Gillian Robertson (12-7) and no. 15 ranked Tabatha Ricci (8-1).

Many fans have looked at Gillian Robertson as the female Khabib Nurmagomedov for some time now, and though she has a number of defeats on her resume, it’s easy to see why.

Robertson holds a few records, including: Most finishes in UFC women’s flyweight history (7), most submission wins in UFC women’s history of any division (7), most submission wins in UFC women’s flyweight history (6), she’s tied with Katlyn Chookagian for the most bouts in UFC women’s flyweight history (13), and she has the third-most wins in UFC women’s flyweight history (8).

What’s more, she’s an absolute stud on the mat. Her grappling is at a very high level, boasting a black belt in BJJ. For instance, she quickly submitted (rear naked choke) former two-time strawweight champion Rose Namajunas in a grappling competition last December.

Robertson is also very good at getting her fights down to the mat where she dominates from top position. And, she’s a true finisher, having finished 10 of her 12 wins with 9 submissions.

Robertson comes into the bout on a two-fight win streak, most recently defeating the likes of Mariya Agapova (rear naked choke) and Piera Rodriguez (armbar). Her most notable victory probably comes over Molly McCann, who she submitted (rear naked choke) back in May of 2018.

Ricci on the other hand comes into the bout on a three-fight win streak. She, like Robertson, is also a BJJ black belt, boasting an additional black belt in Judo.

She came to the UFC with a perfect record of 5-0, losing her debut outing to no. 2 ranked flyweight contender Manon Fiorot. Since then she has consecutively defeated the likes of Maria Oliveira (UD), Polyana Viana (UD), and Jessica Penne (armbar).

Gillian Robertson, though incredibly dominant in many of her fights, has never won more than two-straight inside the octagon. Will that change come next month?

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
