Holly Holm was set to return to the Octagon at UFC 235 against surging bantamweight contender, Aspen Ladd. This fight was an important one as most believed the winner would be getting the next title shot against Amanda Nunes. However, that will no longer be the case.
At the UFC 235 press conference, a notable absence was Holm and Ladd. When asked about why they aren’t here, UFC President Dana White said the fight is off. And they are working on new opponents. However, when I reached out to Ladd’s manager it was the first time he was hearing of the news and didn’t know why Ladd was off the card.
Well, it appears we may know why the fight was scratched. Holm’s manager Lenny Fresquez spoke to ESPN to discuss why Holm is not fighting on UFC 235 against Ladd.
“We’re in negotiations on a contract extension right now,” Fresquez explained. “She’s very disappointed this fight is not happening, but she understands this is a business. We’re in the middle of those negotiations right now, and everybody thought it would be best to get through that.”
Meanwhile, Holm posted on Instagram further explaining why the fight is off, but the post has since been deleted, but here is what she had to say.
”My heart and my mind, my soul, everything was focused for March 2. I’m really bummed out about it. I didn’t have any idea this was going to be canceled and I don’t really know what’s going to happen. But I’m going to keep training and I’m going to show you guys my hard work is going to pay off, whatever the next fight might be.”
Since the news, Ladd is frustrated the fight is off. Her training camp was well underway and now she has to sit and wait to see what is next for her. She is hoping she can remain on the card but now doesn’t know if that is the case.
