Investigation in death of amateur MMA fighter Trokon Dourash complete

On November 23, 2024, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada MMA fighter Trokon Dourash died after a three-round match. The event was held in the community center in Enoch, a First Nation community and was billed as an opportunity for beginners to MMA a chance to compete and it featured more than 30 novice fighters.

Following the event, the Royal Canadian Mountain Police (RCMP) said the Dourash’s participation in the fight contributed to his death.

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit was called in to investigate, in cooperation with the Edmonton Chief Medical Examiner’s office, to determine if there were any criminal offences involved in the death.

On Monday, RCMP said in a written release that the manner of death was deemed to be non-suspicious, and the investigation was complete.

Alberta Sport Minister Andrew Boitchenko stated last week the Alberta government has announced the creation of committee tasked with improving athlete safety in combative sports.

“We are reviewing the options right now across the province and country to see how other jurisdictions are handling this,” he said.
