Israel Adesanya on Sean Strickland title fight at UFC 293: “I’m gonna make this look easy”
UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya spoke on the upcoming Sean Strickland title fight at UFC 293, saying that “I’m gonna make this look easy.”
Adesanya was first supposed to fight Dricus du Plessis, but after the South African injured his foot, the UFC called upon Strickland to fight Adesanya on short notice at UFC 293 next month in Sydney, Australia. On paper, Adesanya is a big favorite to win the fight, but Strickland has been on a roll as of late and shouldn’t be counted out completely. Then again, Adesanya is a champion for a reason, and he thinks he wins easily.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Adesanya broke down the upcoming title fight against Strickland at UFC 293, confirming that while he isn’t underestimating Strickland, he thinks he will blow through him here.
“I never underestimate anyone. I was just thinking about (Michael) Bisping vs. (Luke) Rockhold when Bisping finally beat him, took the fight on like 1.5 weeks’ notice or something, two weeks’ notice. Goes in there, shocks the world. That’s a possible reality. My job is to make sure it’s not in this reality. That’s another parallel universe, another timeline. So like, yeah. I’m very aware of the dangers that he brings and the stuff that he’s really good at,” Adesanya said (via MMAFighting.com).
“I don’t take this lightly. You guys will see me, see I’ve been working. I’m not underestimating this guy but at the same time, I’m not overestimating him. I want to make this look easy. I’m gonna make this look easy cause of the work that we’re doing right now and the way that I’m working right now. I just know.”
While Adesanya does think he will win the fight easily, he did give credit to Strickland for a few of his tools.
“He’s got a nice guard, he’s got a good jab, and to be honest, just crazy. He’s crazy. That’s the X-factor. But again, so am I,” Adesanya said.
