Jack Hermansson submits Kelvin Gastelum in 78 seconds
The UFC continues their stay at “Fight Island” and tonight they will crown another champion.
Deiveson Figueiredo and Joseph Benavidez will once again fight for the vacant flyweight title. The two met in February and Figueiredo walked away with the TKO win, but left without the belt because he failed to make the 125 weight limit. This time bout fighters made weight.
In the co-main event, middleweights Jack Hermansson and Kelvin Gastelum will square off in a meeting between the No. 6 and 7 ranked fighters within the division.
Hermansson (20-5) was on a roll until last September when Jared Cannonier finished Hermansson with a second-round TKO. Before that loss, Hermansson had won four fights in a row with wins over Thales Leites, Gerald Meerschaert, David Branch and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.
Gastelum (15-5, 1NC) is in a rare spot in his career as he comes into the fight on a two-fight losing streak. One of those loses came in a back-and-forth interim title fight with Israel Adesanya. The other loss came by split decision to Darren Till.
Here’s a breakdown of their fight with round-by-round scoring.
Round 1
Gastelum looks relaxed and is calm in his approach. Hermansson shoots in for a takedown early on, and Gastelum counters and flips over Hermansson, putting Hermansson on his back.
Hermansson takes advantage of a quick little mistake and locks in a heel hook forcing Gastelum to tap out just 1:18 into the fight.
Official Result: Jack Hermansson defeats Kelvin Gastelum via first round submission (1:18)
