Deiveson Figueiredo chokes Benavidez unconscious, New flyweight champ

The UFC utilizes “Fight Island”, once again as the host for UFC Fight Night: Figueiredo vs Benavidez tonight, Saturday, July 18th.

Five days removed from UFC on ESPN 13, the promotion brings another loaded fight card to the Flash Forum on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

The main event features Deiveson Figueiredo and Joseph Benavidez in a Flyweight matchup. Jack Hermansson vs Kelvin Gastelum will serve as the co-main event of the evening.

In the main event of the evening, Deiveson Figueiredo and Joseph Benavidez will face off once again for flyweight gold. In their first bout, Figueiredo won via knockout but was unable to capture the title, as he missed weight for the contest.

Tonight, both fighters have made weight, and are looking to avenge an opportunity missed in their initial outing as they vie for the vacant UFC flyweight title.

Round 1

Both fighters are tentative to engage at first. They trade kicks to gauge distance. Figueiredo drops Benavidez quickly with a right hand. Figueiredo pounces on the grounded Benavidez and lands several hard elbows from top position. Benavidez give his up back for Figueiredo to work for the rear naked choke. Benavidez fights the submission off several times as he was in clear trouble. Benavidez is able to get back to his feet where the fighters engage briefly. Figueiredo lands another devastating right hand that drops Benavidez in his tracks. Benavidez has difficulty recovering and gives his back to Figueiredo, once again. Figueiredo wastes no time securing the neck, and locking the rear naked choke. Benavidez refuses to tap and goes unconscious before the referee intervenes as Deiveson Figueiredo is the new UFC flyweight champion.
