Jailton Almeida, UFC 279

Jailton Almeida melts right through Anton Turkalj with submission finish at UFC 279

Jailton Almeida is now 17-2 as a professional and 3-0 inside the octagon with three first round finishes.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, September 10, 2022, for UFC 279, going down live on pay-per-view from the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada.

Considering former main eventer Khamzat Chimaev (11-0) missed weight by 7.5 lbs, weighing in at 178.5 lbs despite the 171 lb limit, we had a bit of a change in match ups.

The Ultimate Fighter 5 winner Nate Diaz (20-13) was initially slated to face no. 3 ranked Chimaev in the main event but will now face former interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson (25-7) in the five round main event of the evening.

Co-headlining the event was supposed to be Ferguson facing no. 14 ranked welterweight contender Li Jingliang (19-7), and Daniel Rodriguez (16-2) was slated against Kevin Holland (23-7-0-1).

In the aftermath of this, Chimaev will face Holland in the five round co-main event of the evening, and Rodriguez will face Jingliang in tonight’s feature fight, marking the first time ever the UFC put on an event with two five round non-title bouts.

One of our six catchweight bouts tonight came at 220 lbs between Brazilian prodigy Jailton Almeida (16-2) and Swedish standout Anton Turkalj (8-0). Almeida comes into the bout having finished every last one of his 16 victories (10 submission, 6 knockout), while Turkalj has finished seven of his eight (5 knockout, 2 submission).

Official Result: Jailton Almeida def. Anton Turkalj via submission (rear naked choke) at 4:27 of round one

Almeida secures an easy double leg takedown about 15 seconds into the opening round and immediately secures wrist control whilst attempting to take the back of Turkalj.

Almeida is patient, barely throwing and ground-and-pound, but searching for a submission. He goes from an arm-triangle, but the angle is wrong with the fence right there in the way and he postures up to throw some punches.

This forced Turkalj to turn, giving up his back, where Almeida sinks in a rear naked choke finish.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
