Joe Martinez previews UFC 291, Crawford vs Spence, and discusses his career journey

Joe Martinez is a longtime boxing ring announcer and has taken the road less traveled to where he is now, also announcing UFC and Invicta FC events. Having began and spending a majority of his career announcing baseball on many different levels, Martinez has gone through many different avenues in his sports broadcasting career which has landed him to be one of the premier voices in the combat sports world, introducing some of the most premier fights in both boxing and mixed martial arts.

Ahead of a busy weekend in combat sports, Martinez spoke with MyMMANews.com about the big UFC 291 pay-per-view which sees the return of the ‘BMF’ title main event between Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier, as well as the boxing blockbuster welterweight championship between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr which also takes place on Saturday.

Looking at the main event matchup between Poirier and Gaethje, Joe Martinez believes not only is the fight going to be fireworks, but Dustin Poirier is on a roll right now and he’s glad that the ‘BMF’ title wasn’t just a one-time thing.

“I’m indifferent when it comes to that title but I’m glad it was created, and I’m glad it wasn’t a one-off like we had anticipated it being initially. Yeah, two guys who are performing at this time in their career. Not to pick a fighter but I think Poirier is on fire right now and he’s going to be tough to beat on Saturday.”

Nothing was ever handed to Joe Martinez throughout his career that has spanned from baseball to boxing, and now includes mixed martial arts with two of the biggest promotions in the world, UFC and Invicta FC.
