Jon Jones Avoiding Rematch With Alexander Gustafsson – Wants Daniel Cormier Next
With each day that goes by, it seems more and more that UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (20-1) is dodging a rematch with top contender Alexander Gustafsson (16-2).
It was first speculated that Jones was in negotiations for a brand new contract, White debunked that theory today.
“Just to clear up a couple things, people think we’re in contract negotiations with Jon Jones – we’re not. Jon Jones still has five fights left on his contract,” White said on Monday via www.ufc.com.
UFC president Dana White continued, ” So what we’re doing right now is trying to get him (Jones) to sign the bout agreement for Gustafsson. He doesn’t want to fight Gustafsson.”
Jones has been hesitant in past interviews in granting Gustafsson the rematch, claiming he won convincingly, while many felt that “The Mauler” won the fight and should have been crowned champion.
“Lorenzo and I have a meeting with Jones on Thursday to get him to sign the bout agreement, and he’s asking to fight Cormier instead.”
Daniel Cormier (15-0) just defeated MMA legend Dan Henderson at UFC 173 very convincingly.
Both Cormier and Gustafsson are arguably title contenders, and Jones may feel that he matches up better with Cormier due to his distinct size advantage.
It will only be a matter of time until Gustafsson and Jones cross paths again.
So, who would you rather see Jones fight next, rematch with Gus or a bout with Cormier?
