Jon Jones, Israel Adesanya

Jon Jones to Israel Adesanya – “Taking those last three years off was one of the best decisions I’ve made”

Former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya and current UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones used to be foes, at least online anyway.

Back before Jones was the top heavyweight in the world, he was the light heavyweight kingpin and there were talks of Adesanya moving up to challenge “Bones” for his title at 205-pounds.

That fight never did come to fruition, and instead the once bitter enemies, eventually talked out their grievances and buried the hatchet.

After losing his middleweight title to Sean Strickland, Adesanya has announced that he would like to take some time away from the sport.

“I’m going to take time to look after myself, and I’m not going to fight for a long time,” Adesanya said on ‘The Rock’ podcast. “I’m definitely not going to retire because I know me – I’m not leaving like that. I know me. But if I did, I’m fine. I don’t need to prove anything else. But I know what I can do and what I can change in my lifestyle to make my body adapt to where I need to be. I’m going to heal myself up. You won’t see me fight for a long time.”

Now, Jones, who took three years away from the sport while he bulked up to heavyweight, offered some encouraging words in support of his new found friend.

“Hey @stylebender I just want to let you know I support your decision to take a break from fighting. Taking those last three years off was one of the best decisions I’ve made. Always put YOU first brother. Protect your heart, protect your mimd & spirit. Proud of you Champ.”
