Jorge Masvidal claims a title fight against Kamaru Usman is set for September
Is a rematch between Jorge Masvidal and Kamaru Usman next?
Jorge Masvidal seems like the next logical person to challenge Kamaru Usman for his welterweight title. Usman is coming off a win over Gilbert Burns at UFC 258 and looked like he was at his best. He defeated Burns by third-round TKO and put another notch on his legendary career. He is now in talks for the greatest welterweight of all time, but it seems he will have to run it back with Masvidal to secure that entitlement. Masvidal took the last fight against Usman on short notice and has been asking for another shot with a full camp since he lost back in the summer. Now Masvidal has announced that he has secured this shot.
“Right now I’m focused on me fighting for the belt, which is going to be in August/September, actually September, we just got word on this,” Masvidal said while commentating at a boxing event this past weekend. “So you’re like the second person actually to know this right now. That’s just how luck works man. A lot of MMA media sites are going to be mad I dropped to on yours first, boxing of all people. There’s going to call me a traitor. But that’s what I’m worried about.”
Usman’s management has rebutted this statement. The stand that no such fight has been determined at this point although there have been talks and it seems that is the direction they are heading in.
“Masvidal doesn’t decide anything,” Usman’s manager Ali Abdelaziz said to MMAFighting.com. “He needs to sit down and keep working his wrestling. When the champ makes a decision maybe he will give them an opportunity but for now nothing [is] happening.”
Whoever decides to announce this matchup, it seems like it will be going down later this year. Masvidal had first mentioned wanting the fight in April and suggested Florida as a location.
