Jose Aldo calls for Sterling to sign contract, Cejudo “clown”
MMA legend and the third ranked bantamweight Jose Aldo has called for bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling for a title defense. Sterling, of course, made his first defense against Petr Yan at UFC 273 earlier this month. Aldo has been on a tear himself and has clawed his way up the ranks to his current standing.
Jose Aldo vs. Aljamain Sterling: Legacy Defining
Aljamain,
I am waiting for you to sign the contract for our fight. There is no doubt that the fans want to watch this fight. We are currently the 2 best bantamweights in the UFC.— Jose Aldo Junior (@josealdojunior) April 28, 2022
On Twitter, Jose Aldo called for the fight saying he and Aljamain Sterling are the two best bantamweights in the world despite him being ranked third. In the thread, Aldo talks about Dillashaw being a cheat who hasn’t fought in two years with the exception of the Sandhagen fight which he mentions he believes Dillashaw lost.
In a separate tweet, Aldo points to former champion Henry Cejudo citing that he was out for two years faking a retirement trying to get paid more. He also says that Cejudo was out of USADA’s drug testing pool.
For both Aldo and Sterling, a fight with each other would be legacy defining. For Sterling, his win over Petr Yan to win the title was illegitimate and it wasn’t until his second fight when he took a decision over Yan that many saw him as legitimate. A win over Aldo, one of the greatest MMA fighters ever and the former featherweight champion, would further cement that, but in all fairness, a win over Cejudo or Dillashaw would mean the same.
For Jose Aldo, a second belt would be vindication after his defeat to Conor McGregor all those years ago. While he later recaptured the featherweight title, similar to Sterling, many didn’t see Aldo as the “real champion.” He made the move to bantamweight in 2019 and suffered a close loss to Marlon Moraes and lost to Petr Yan for the title. Since then, he’s won great fights against Chito Vera, Pedro Munhoz, and Rob Font and has found himself in striking distance for a title shot.
