Jose Aldo reveals he’s retiring from MMA very soon: ‘I’ll beat him and then I’ll win the belt, it’s already written’
Jose Aldo only has a few fights left in his career.
Aldo is set to face Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 278 on August 20 in a potential number one contender fight at bantamweight. Dvalishvili is someone not many people wanted to fight but the Brazilian is eager for the challenge.
Although Aldo is on a nice run at bantamweight and coming off a win over Rob Font, and should he win here, he will likely get a crack at the belt. According to the former featherweight champion, he says the plan is to beat Dvalishvili, win the belt and then retire from MMA as a champion.
“When we first started, I told Dede [Pederneiras] that at 35 I’d be champion and I’d retire. That is why I say that I’m very close to retiring, though I used to say I’d retire as a champion. You can give me Merab Dvalishvili, he’s a really tough guy, well-ranked, that nobody wants to fight. I’ll beat him and then I’ll win the belt, it’s already written,” Aldo said to Combate. “Dede and I used to dream about being double champions at featherweight and lightweight, but that ended up being different. We dropped to bantamweight and we’re about to fight for the title in this division. I started out at bantamweight, I never thought I’d make that cut again. Now I’m ending my career at bantamweight, right where I started.”
Jose Aldo is 35-years-old and has been a professional since 2004 and has fought 38 times as a pro. With that, it shouldn’t be a surprise he is ready to retire from the sport soon as he has said in the past he’s ready to retire at 35.
Aldo, as mentioned, is coming off a decision win over Rob Font while he also beat Pedro Munhoz and Marlon Vera. The win over ‘Chito’ snapped his three-fight losing skid as he lost by TKO loss to Petr Yan for the belt after losing a controversial split decision to Marlon Moraes in his 135lbs debut.
