Amanda Nunes accepts rematch with Julianna Pena for 2022

Julianna Pena blasts ‘the champ of a division of one person’ Amanda Nunes

Julianna Pena doesn’t think Amanda Nunes is a real UFC champion right now.

Nunes is the current featherweight champion and was the former bantamweight champion but she lost the belt to Pena back at UFC 269 last December. The two are now set to coach The Ultimate Fighter and will have their rematch later this year and before that, Pena has taken a shot at Nunes as she doesn’t think she is a real champion as she doesn’t think the featherweight division is a real division.

“Let’s talk about this for a second,” Pena told “The Schmo.” “So Holly (Holm) and Germaine (de Randamie) both said that they’re not going back to featherweight at 145 and they’re going to stay true bantamweights at 135. Megan Anderson retired. Felicia Spencer retired. Can you name anybody else in the division other than Amanda? She’s a champ in the ’45 division of who? She says that she’s still, you know, the champ of a division of one person. So that’s nice.”

Of course, what Julianna Pena is saying is not totally out of the question as there are no rankings for the featherweight division and only a handful of fighters compete in the division. However, Amanda Nunes will have the chance to reclaim her bantamweight title against Pena later this year after Pena scored a massive upset back at UFC 269.

Pena also says she believes Nunes is confident she will get her belt back and is ready for the rematch after the two coached TUF.

“I would say that she’s a little bit more high-maintenance than I had originally anticipated, that’s for sure,” Pena said. “I would definitely say that there’s a little bit of a sad bravado about her that I think she’s really wanting to come back and get her belt back. So we had some words, we had some choice words. You’re going to have to watch the show.”
