Karl Roberson sent to hospital, removed from UFC on ESPN+ 29
UFC on ESPN+ 29 will be continuing without Karl Roberson due to medical issues stemming from a failed weight cut.
A middleweight bout between Roberson and Marvin Vettori is off the card, which now features 10 bouts at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida.
Roberson tipped the scales at 1.5 pounds over the middleweight limit on Tuesday, May 12. First reported by ESPN, Roberson fell ill during the evening and was transported to a local hospital. Roberson was released from the hospital on Wednesday morning, but was not cleared to compete.
The two were originally slated to fight at a UFC Fight Night card on April 25, but the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kevin Holland, who is scheduled to fight on this Saturday’s upcoming card, has offered to fill in on short notice for the fight.
Karl Roberson Momentum Slowed
Karl Roberson is currently riding a two-fight win streak, most recently choking out Roman Kopylov at UFC Moscow in November 2019. His other victory includes a split-decision win against Wellington Turman at UFC on ESPN+ 13 in July 2019.
Like Roberson, Vettori is unbeaten in his last two outings. He most recently defeated Andrew Sanchez via unanimous decision at UFC on ESPN+19 in October 2019. Previously, Vettori earned a unanimous decision against Cezar Ferreira at UFC on ESPN+ 13.
The event is headlined by light-heavyweights Anthony Smith and Glover Teixeira. The UFC has not announced which bout will move up to the main card.
The UFC on ESPN+ 29 main card airs on ESPN+ tonight at 9 p.m. Stay tuned to My MMA News for all the news and results from this weeks pair of UFC Jacksonville cards. Thanks for reading!
