Kevin Lee targeting rematch with Tony Ferguson
Kevin Lee has taken some time away from MMA. Following his submission loss to Charles Oliveira last March, Lee is ready to move forward and get back in the Octagon. He has a name in mind for his return fight, and that name is Tony Ferguson. These two men have faced each other before, back in 2017 for the interim title. Ferguson walked out of that fight with the submission win victory and the interim lightweight belt around his waist. since then Ferguson has gone 2-2 with his last two being back-to-back losses. Lee has not faired well either since the first meeting, having set a record of 2-3. Lee feels like now is the time to run it back.
“Us running it back makes a whole lot of sense from all standpoints, especially when you look at where this division is and where it’s going,” Lee said in an interview with SCMP.com. “One of us is going to stay and one of us is going to leave. Tony Ferguson’s top of the list – I don’t even have a close second to be honest with you.”
In his time away from the sport, Lee had to deal with some injuries. He had surgery on both of his knees. He is now getting back in shape and would like to set something up with Ferguson later this year.
“We’re kind of teetering back and forth on whether it’s June or July, but I think this summer sounds good,” Kevin Lee said. “The UFC always puts on a big event around July 4, so that first week of July might work out perfectly. If not, maybe June and I can (have) my own card. It all depends on who the opponent is.”
Ferguson is sitting in the number 5 spot in the official UFC rankings and still very much in the vicinity of a title shot with one good win. Lee however is sitting outside the top ten, in the number 12 spot. If he were to lockdown a fight with Ferguson and win, he could find himself in the right position for another [possible title shot in just a few short fights.
