Dana White, UFC history, Tony Ferguson vs Khabib Nurmagomedov set for UFC 223

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s father says Khabib-Tony Ferguson is ‘the most important fight in UFC history’

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson are booked to fight each other for a fifth time on April. 18 in Brooklyn, New York. It is a highly-anticipated fight as many believe “El Cucuy” is the man to finally beat the undefeated Dagestani champion. But, if Nurmagomedov wins, it only cements himself as one of the best ever.

For Khabib’s father and coach, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, he believes it is the most important fight in UFC history.

“Because this isn’t the first attempt, I think it is one of the most important events in this sport,” Abdulmanap told RT Sport recently (via MMA Fighting). “It was planned four times and called off twice because of Khabib and twice because of Tony. Millions of fans are waiting for it. There’s never been anything like this in UFC history. It’s the most important fight in UFC history. It is important not only for me but for my republic, my country, and all our supporters.”

The two were supposed to fight four years ago. But, for Abdulmanap, he believes the delay is a good thing as they have only made Nurmagomedov a better fighter and is confident the lightweight champion will stick to his game plan.

“Throughout all this time we were able to improve our skills in different aspects, especially striking technique,” Abdulmanap added. “We surprise [opponents] more and more each time. [Coach] Javier [Mendez] promises to surprise this time but Khabib won’t stray from his father’s plan.”

In the end, Abdulmanap believes Tony Ferguson is a very good opponent for Khabib Nurmagomedov and they are preparing hard for him.

“First of all, he’s got good endurance, a good winning streak,” Abdulmanap concluded. “He’s been caught, but he finishes all his fights with submissions, cuts or technical knockouts. He has a good arsenal, he is a worthy opponent and we are preparing accordingly.”
