Lauren Murphy details why she wants to fight Cynthia Calvillo next
UFC flyweight Lauren Murphy is not only now riding a three-fight winning streak, but she’s on the short list of title contenders to champion Valentina Shevchenko, after her recent win over Roxanne Modafferri at UFC Vegas 3 this month. However, before any title shot opportunity presents itself, Murphy would like to prove herself against another worthy flyweight contender, Cynthia Calvillo.
Recently a guest on the ‘On The Mic Podcast‘ Murphy detailed why she wants to fight Calvillo, who made her debut in the division with a win over former title challenger Jessica Eye in a five-round main event. The win over Eye brought Calvillo immediately to the top of the flyweight rankings where she sits second, but Murphy said she feels the winner of the fight will have won the honor to face Shevchenko.
So, why does @LaurenMurphyMMA want @cyn_calvillo as her next opponent?

“Yeah I think I’m definitely in title talk now and I don’t mind fighting one more time for contention, I really want to fight Cynthia Calvillo and I think the winner of that fight should have the honor of fighting Valentina.”
While a three-fight winning streak for most fighters in the division would set them up for a title opportunity, Murphy explained that Calvillo’s style as a fighter is why she wants to face her before any talks of a title fight come to fruition.
“Cynthia’s an exciting fighter, Cynthia can do everything. She’ll get in there, she’ll mix it up, she’ll bang with you, she doesn’t mind being in the pocket, she can wrestle really well she showed that against Jessica, she’s got a great ground game and she’s always looking for the finish. Those are the kind of fights I want to test myself in. Not only that, Cynthia is just the girl to beat right now. She walked into the division and took the number two spot, she really does have a lot of buzz around her right now and I want to go steal that, I want to make that mine.”
On the most successful and impressive run of her UFC career, Lauren Murphy is ready to truly show she’s up for contention in the flyweight division, and wants one of the hottest names in Calvillo to prove that she’s worth it.
While the champion Valentina Shevchenko will likely face Joanne Calderwood in her next title defense, a fight between Murphy and Calvillo could certainly be a title eliminator, if the UFC wants to make the fight a reality.
