Leon Edwards believes that he should be holding the BMF title with a win over Masvidal
Leon Edwards is all set with his next UFC matchup. He will be taking on Jorge Masvidal at the UFC 269 event on December 11. This fight with Masvidal was a long time coming since these two have some unfinished business. The two men were involved in a scuffle backstage in London after Masvidal beat Darren Till. Words were exchanged and punches were thrown. Since then Masvidal has been calling for a fight with Edwards.
Edwards was originally waiting for a title shot with Kamaru Usman, but with Usman taking on Colby Covington, Masvidal now gets his wish. The thing is Edwards wants something else out of this bout as well.
“This is my 12th fight in a row without losing, and I am looking forward to going out there and showing the world just how good I am,” Edwards told Ariel Helwani of The MMA Hour. “To go out there and take out Nate and take out Masvidal, the two BMFs, I feel like I deserve that belt. Give me that belt after.”
The BMF title is a made-up belt from back when Masvidal beat Nate Diaz. They were fighting to find out who the “Baddest Mother-F–ker” in the UFC was. Masvidal took home the belt and has never actually thought it would be defended. Since it isn’t a real title and can’t be defended, Leon Edwards claim to it has no bearing, however, if he definitively beats Masvidal after he has just beaten Diaz, he could very well claim to be the BMF champ.
Whether or not the winner comes home with the BMF title one thing that can be assumed from this welterweight matchup is that the winner could receive the next title shot. With the top of the welterweight rankings so crowded, a huge win by either man could seal their title contention.
