Liz Carmouche quotes from Bellator 261 Media Day

Bellator 261 takes place on Friday, June 25th live from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. The fistic festivities broadcast on Showtime. I spoke with Liz Carmouche at the Bellator 261 Media Day ahead of her co-main event flyweight contest against the unbeaten Kana Watanabe.

I was just curious because the name Ronda Rousey was mentioned earlier at the beginning of the scrum. You’re working with Justin Flores, her longtime judo coach.

You’re readying to fight somebody who was an Olympic qualifier in judo and is a decorated player in their own regard. Do you feel the tools are sharpened in the most ideal way for this kind of opponent?

“Yeah, absolutely. Working with Justin Flores was really about my own growth. I didn’t know that I was gonna be facing Kana. In no way had that set in stone or anything like that. It was just me wanting to step out to grow better as a fighter, and I had an opportunity to work with Justin and he was wonderful. It just happened to translate so well that the things I learned with him, I can apply to use in this fight.”

And just as a quick follow up out of curiosity because I had seen an article where you were crediting the military for the career longevity. Just with Timothy Johnson also being a military veteran as well and having that past.

I’m kind of wondering have you gotten to have any interaction with Tim? Talk about those mutual experiences at all or not so much?

“No, unfortunately because of COVID I haven’t really had any interaction with any of the other fighters. I usually do. I do feel like there are moments in the past where we would have an opportunity to get to know each other. See our associations, our backgrounds whether it’s military or otherwise. But because of COVID we can’t interact with each other, we have to stay in our rooms separately. So I haven’t been able to touch base in any of my fights with any other fighters.”
