Lorenzo Hunt on Chris Camozzi “He’s Not a Bare-Knuckle Fighter”

Lorenzo Hunt and Chris Camozzi will battle for the former’s cruiserweight championship at BKFC 50 on September 22nd. The dual division BKFC titleholder and number two pound-for-pound ranked fighter in the company Hunt looks to reassert his dominance by putting the first blemish on Camozzi’s record in this combat sport.

The fistic fireworks emanate from 1STBANK Center in Denver, Colorado, and the pugilistic proceedings are broadcast on the Bare Knuckle TV app and FITE TV.

Hunt spoke to Dylan Bowker before this BKFC 50 title bout. Excerpts from the chat are below.

Lorenzo Hunt

I think it was a great day for fans when this Chris Camozzi fight was initially announced.

When did the BKFC 50 bout agreement and everything initially get on your radar?

“Since Chris Camozzi’s been here, he kind of been calling me out. I think he only; I think he called me out right after his first debut. It was strange because that’s the same day that I had went to the Mike Richman and (Isaac) Doolittle fight. I’m starting to think that perhaps he was even brought into this organization specifically to fight for the belt, you know what I mean (laughs)? Because like I said, who comes in day one and challenges the champ?”

“I think it’s stupid. This is a different sport than what he’s used to. This isn’t K1 kickboxing, this isn’t the UFC, this isn’t boxing. Those guys have come to the BKFC and done poorly you know. Maybe he thinks he’s Neo in The Matrix and that he can just come over and just have his way. The two guys that he fought weren’t even BKFC fighters. So, he couldn’t have picked up anything. He couldn’t have picked up anything as far as experience when it comes to dealing with a true veteran, champion BKFC fighter.”

Lorenzo Hunt continued, “I think that he’s attempting to circumvent any real challenge by going straight for the championship. He hasn’t been vetted, so I don’t know. They made the fight. I’ve never turned down a fight ever. If David Feldman puts your name on a piece of paper, he thinks you’re worthy. I’ve become the champion because of my willingness to fight, no other reason. Here we are (laughs). So here we are, you know.”

BKFC 50

You’ve made your feelings clear on the quality of your opponent’s bare-knuckle opposition leading into BKFC 50.

But even within that, what do you think some of Chris Camozzi’s better stylistic attributes are as a bare-knuckle fighter?

“Stylistically he’s not a bare-knuckle fighter but he’s a fighter. Everybody’s a fighter, every man is a fighter. He’s a big body, he’s a solid guy, he has a solid fight history. He’s been in a lot of fights which doesn’t always translate into elite-level fighter, you know. Been in the UFC for years, never been a champion. He’s been in K1, never been a champion and there’s a reason why.”

“People will, you know, they will scoff at the BKFC and at my championship run. That I’ve been the champ for nearly two years, consistently defending it, took it. I was the best in the business before I became champion. So, it’s not like it’s hit or miss for me. It’s hit, hit, hit, hit, and it hasn’t been that way for him in his career which is why we’re here now, you know. I don’t think he has what it takes but the fans are able to, you know, you can disagree with me up until fight night.”

Lorenzo Hunt vs Chris Camozzi

So as a statement win, this wouldn’t really be a standout one on your BKFC resume maybe as compared to some previous opposition you’ve had?

“Just another UFC guy coming over and trying to make a statement and getting smashed. No, no it won’t be as big as the Mike Richman fight. It won’t be as big as the Quentin Henry fight. Won’t be as big as me and Hector Lombard. It’s just a guy that came over called me out. If he get smashed everybody; when he gets smashed, everybody’s gonna say ah we knew that already, you know. It’s everything to gain for him and it’s nothing to gain for me. I’m already the champ in two different divisions.”

“I’m already the most dominant fighter in the bare-knuckle history, I’m already these things. He has to come in here and make a statement. Even if like he goes the distance with me, it’ll be like wow. You’re one of the only people in the world that could even go the distance with Lorenzo Hunt, you know what I mean? Wow, you didn’t get knocked out. It’s a compliment even for him standing in there with me. Just it’s a compliment to him. It’s like oh wow, I can’t believe you did that.”
