Mackenzie Dern dominates Angela Hill, secures three 10-8 rounds in UFC Vegas 73 main event

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us today, May 20, 2023, for UFC Vegas 73, going down live from the UFC Apex in Enterprise, Nevada.

Headlining the event was a women’s strawweight encounter between no. 8 ranked BJJ sensation Mackenzie Dern (13-3) and no. 14 ranked kickboxer Angela Hill (15-13).

Dern came into the bout having gone 5-2 over her latest seven appearances, while Hill had gone 3-3 over her last six.

Official Result: Mackenzie Dern def. Angela Hill via unanimous decision (49-43, 49-44, 49-44)

Dern lands a nice right hand to begin the bout before initiating a clinch. Once she doesn’t secure the takedown she separates and the two are back to striking range, where Dern gets back to work with her boxing. She looks very sharp on the feet and drops Hill with a short punch midway through the opening round.

From here it was absolute domination on the mat by Dern; she came very close to securing an armbar finish at the end of the round, and perhaps would’ve stopped the fight had there been a few more seconds in it.

Hill has a much better round two, as she clinches Dern along the fence for much of it whilst stuffing Dern’s hip toss attempts.

Dern gets right back to the mauling in round three, absolutely battering Hill from top position with nasty punches and elbows. The opening round very well could’ve been a 10-8 for Dern, and round three was even more dominant. She came very close to securing an armbar at the very end of the round once again, but the clock again ran out.

Round four is also all Dern, though she isn’t able to get Hill down to the mat until the final 40 seconds.

Dern’s boxing continues to look sharp, she’s landing a lot, mixing a few leg kicks in here and there, and wins the clinch exchanges.

The fifth and final round could also be rightfully scored 10-8 for her, as she handily out-grapples Hill while reigning down heavy punches and elbows. This was by far Dern’s meanest performance.

Over the course of Dern’s last two fights, she’s had five arguable 10-8 rounds; she lost her last fight via majority decision in a bout that many scored a draw, and she gets back to her winning ways tonight with a dominant victory over Angela Hill at UFC Vegas 73.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
