Magomed Ankalaev Punishes Anthony Smith in Round 2 at UFC 277

UFC 277: Peña vs. Nunes goes down TONIGHT at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

In the main event a rematch between Julianna Peña and Amanda Nunes for the woman’s bantamweight world championship. Also featured an interim championship bout between Brandon Moreno and Kai Kara-France also face off in a rematch for UFC gold.

Also on the main card, a heavyweight between Derrick Lewis and Sergei Pavlovich. In addition, another flyweight fight goes down between Alexandre Pantoja and Alex Perez.

In this highlighted play-by-play Magomed Ankalaev and Anthony Smith clash as the first fight in a stacked UFC 277 card.

Ankaleav (17-1), has only fallen to one defeat which came in his UFC debut to crafty submission specialist Paul Craig. Since then the Russian has been pictured perfect leading up to the fight with wins over Nikita Krylov, Ion Cutelaba x2, Volkan Oezdemir and Thiago Santos.

Anthony Smith (36-16), has picked up some momentum again and more importantly a spark in his eye. Since losing to Aleksandr Rakic in 2020, ‘Lionheart’ is coming in with three solid wins behind him against Devin Clark, Jimmy Crute and an first round submission over Ryan Spann.

Ankalaev takes on a crafty veteran in Smith, a tough test for the Russian.

Here’s how the fight played out round by round:

ROUND 1:

Main card opener here we go. A patient start from both fighters, a lot of kicks early respectively from both competitors. Ankalaev lands a heavy left high kick, the first big action in the round as we reach one minute left. Smith opens up with a right hand. A very slow first round.

ROUND 2:

Hopefully we see more urgency from both fighters in this round. Smith comes out with pressure backing up Ankalaev on the cage, Smith looks for a takedown. Ankalaev reverses the position and now is in full guard. Big ground strikes from Ankalaev and Smith turns his back. Ankalaev is RAINING DOWN with punches and the referee stops the fight!
