Matchmaker Monday following UFC 245
Wow!!! What a way to end the final pay-per-view of 2019. UFC 245 was a stacked card and it fully delivered. Now let’s find out what’s next for some of the men and women involved in the championship fights on this Matchmaker Monday.
Kamaru Usman, welterweight
Result: Defeats Colby Covington via fifth-round TKO
Up Next: Jorge Masvidal
Personally, I think the UFC lost money with Covington losing. Reason being it’s pretty obvious that Masvidal is next. Given the bad blood between Covington and Masvidal, that fight would have done big numbers.
Now that Usman reigned his title and now he’ll fight Masvidal in what is still a big time match up. Only thing that could throw a wretch into things is if Masvidal pursues super fights instead of fighting for a UFC world championship.
Colby Covington, welterweight
Result: Lost to Kamaru Usman via fifth-round TKO
Up Next: Stephen Thompson
Well the UFC’s biggest villain suffered a loss and possibly a huge blow to his ego. Nonetheless the guy showed just how good he is.
God only knows what crazy thing Covington is going to do next, but if it’s a fight I like the matchup with Wonderboy. Stylistically it looks fun and from a rankings perspective it works. Not to mention they’re both banged up right now so they can square off when they both heal up.
UFC President Dana White said he is interested in pairing Covington up against former champion Tyron Woodley.
Alexander Volkanovski & Max Holloway, featherweights
Result: Volkanovski won via unanimous decision
Up Next: Rematch
A rematch is a no brainer. Holloway may have been the GOAT of the division. The loss snapped Holloway’s 14 fight winning streak within the division. Following the fight Dana White said the rematch would be next for the two. Hats off to Volkanovski on one hell of a performance. Let’s see if he can do it again…
Amanda Nunes, bantamweight
Result: Defeated Germaine de Randamie via unanimous decision
Up Next: Holly Holm at featherweight
I’m jumping the gun and saying Holm wins her fight in January. I still to see more minutes between Nunes and Holm. I thought Holm was doing great in their first fight until she made one mistake and got kicked in the head. Granted it was in the first round and Nunes could have ran away with it from there, but we’ll never know.
Nunes next fight must take place at 145 pounds. If she wants to keep the champ-champ status she needs to fight at featherweight.
Regardless of who the UFC goes with, does anyone think Nunes is going to lose? In her UFC 245 win we learned that she is not only dangerous everywhere the fight goes, but she is a very smart fighter as well. We’re all witnessing something special whenever she fights.
