Mayhem in Sunrise! Mayweather vs. Gotti III ends due to trash talk; then the fight started

Boxing royalty, Floyd Mayweather Jr. (50-0) returned to the ring Sunday in an exhibition bout against a fighter with a name that carries a lot of weight, John Gotti III. As things inside the ring were slow to get started in the early rounds, the trash-talking heated up between the two fighters. Gotti III crossed over from mixed martial arts where he holds a professional record of 5-1. The fight took place at the FLA Live Arena in Sunrise, Florida.

Mayweather got to work inside the ring right away as he pressured Gotti III with very little response from the Long Island native. As the boxing legend frustrated Gotti through five rounds his trash-talking amplified. While Mayweather continued peppering Gotti, the words continued to flow to the point Gotti responded with words of his own leading to Kenny Bayless, the referee informing both camps between rounds if the trash-talking continued he would end the fight.

In the sixth round, with 0:59 seconds remaining Kenny Bayless breaks the two fighters apart while telling them to stop trash-talking and waves his hands in the air calling an end to the fight. After Bayless calls the fight, Gotti was not having it and went swinging at Mayweather with more aggression than he showed the entire night. While Gotti III was swinging at the boxing legend, both camps poured into the ring. After the two fighters were separated, Mayweather’s people pressured the few Gotti team members into their corner where John Gotti III exited the ring. It was pure chaos from there as the venue and event lacked security personnel.

Gotti III was competing in his third professional boxing match against “Money” Mayweather and entered the bout with a 2-0 record. Mayweather, a retired professional boxer with a perfect record of 50-0, entered his seventh exhibition fight. Mayweather had his way with the MMA fighter through five rounds if there were judges scoring, he would have been up five rounds entering that sixth round.

The bout was scheduled for eight rounds before Kenny Bayless heard enough. We can expect more rules and security to be in place for future exhibition bouts in Florida.

At the end of the stream, we could hear the female commentator mention she was knocked out by someone while the fight in and out of the ring was occurring. This isn’t the first time Gotti III’s camp, family, and friends participated in a brawl while he was competing. The first time took place during his second amateur bout and only amateur MMA loss. A commentator there too was knocked out.
