Mike Brown says he’s ‘heartbroken’ he won’t get to see Jorge Masvidal win the title in person
Mike Brown will not be in Jorge Masvidal’s corner at UFC 251.
Brown, the longtime coach at American Top Team, and coach for Masvidal recently tested positive for COVID-19. So, Brown is back home in Florida and won’t be in “Gamebred’s” corner for his first UFC title shot. For the coach, he says he is absolutely heartbroken he won’t be in Abu Dhabi with Masvidal.
“Just heartbroken I’m not going to see Jorge win the world championship in person,” Mike Brown told ESPN. “Nobody deserves it more than this guy. Nobody has paid more dues. Jorge is also one of the most thoughtful athletes I’ve ever met. He makes everyone feel they are with him and a huge part of this journey. The truth is this guy has been honing his skills for more than 20 years and developed one of the highest fight IQs the sport has ever seen. As far as being COVID positive, I feel good. The only pain I feel is in my heart.”
Jorge Masvidal enters this fight on short notice after Gilbert Burns tested positive for COVID-19. The fight was something many fans have wanted to see ever since Kamaru Usman defended his welterweight title against Colby Covington at UFC 245.
Gamebred enters this fight on a three-fight winning streak where last time out he scored a doctor stoppage win over Nate Diaz at UFC 244 to win the BMF title. In 2019 he also had the five-second KO win over Ben Askren and a KO win over Darren Till.
Masvidal enters this fight as a sizeable underdog but has been confident since the fight got announced that he will knockout Usman.
For “The Nigerian Nightmare” he is undefeated in the UFC and is looking for his second title defense. He won the title last March with a dominant decision win over Tyron Woodley.
