Nate Diaz calls for a fight with Dustin Poirier at any weight class
Nate Diaz is getting ready to make his return to the UFC Octagon later this year. That much has been made clear by Nate himself through multiple social media teasings and through UFC president Dana White who told media Diaz was looking to return to the lightweight division. Now it seems that Diaz is not entirely set on making that drop to 155 pounds to join a stacked lightweight division and instead might be looking to return to welterweight.
“NDA soldier 170 lbs,” Diaz wrote on Twitter, “Come get you some of the real.”
This call-out is not pointed at anyone in particular but later Diaz takes aim at Dustin Poirier by posting a video of him in a hospital with the caption, “These are fighting words tho. So fuck a weight class.”
In the video, Poirier is making comments about steroids and then says “f–k you Nate.” These two have been saying each other’s names for quite a while. Even before Poirier beat Conor McGregor at UFC 257 he seemed to be looking towards Diaz as a potential opponent. After the win, he continued his quest towards Diaz and Diaz reciprocated the desire.
Poirier is in a very good position right now. He just beat a man who is a former champion and the most popular man on the roster. With the fate of the champion Khabib Nurmagomedov still in limbo, Poirier could be the next guy to fight for the UFC lightweight title. The thing is Poirier doesn’t want to fight Michael Chandler. Chandler had a big win in his UFC debut and might be next in line for a title shot. IF Poirier doesn’t want that fight, then a big money fight with Diaz would be the next best thing.
If they both want to fight and can agree not to cut the weight down to 155 pounds, then a welterweight bout could work. We have seen more fighters choosing to fight at a higher weight class especially in the COVID era.
