Nate Diaz : “Let’s get this retirement fight cracking”
Nate Diaz (20-13) has not been as active as he himself or fight fans who love watching him compete had hoped.
The 36-year-old fighter from Stockton, California has one win in his last four outings, dating back six years to 2016.
Despite the losing streak, Diaz is a fan-favorite who has been itching to get a crack at Dustin Poirier. While the fight seems like an obvious choice for the UFC to put together, and one that would generate enough buzz to warrant a hefty payday, no progress has been made.
In a recent interview with TMZ, Diaz talked about the frustrations he has had in getting the fight he wants, and even hints at possible retirement.
“I would like to fight Dustin Poirier. Like now,” Diaz said. “Like I’ve been trying to. If there’s any mix-up it’s him, and them, and the game.
“I want the fight now. What’s up Dana White? Let’s get this retirement fight cracking so I can get out of this fight game. I’m done with it.”
Will the fight ever come to fruition?
Poirier recently stated that he too wants the matchup.
“If Nate Diaz does get a deal done with the UFC, that’s a fight we’ve been supposed to do,” Poirier said. “I think the fans would be in for a treat. That’s something I want to do,” Poirier continued. “Where I’m at, I just want to fight fights that mean something to me and all these up-and-coming guys, they’re very dangerous and very fun to fight and maybe I will fight some of them, but right now I want fights that mean something to me, and Nate’s a fight that means something to me.”
Diaz last fought in June 2021 where he lost a unanimous decision to Leon Edwards at UFC 263. Prior to that he was on the losing side of a doctor’s stoppage when he fought Jorge Masvidal at UFC 244 in November 2019.
