Association of Boxing Commissions votes to adopt four new weight classes – 165, 175, 195, 225
Change is coming
Today the Association of Boxing Commissions voted unanimously at the 29th annual ABC convention, to adopt four new weight classes to the unified rules of MMA. There will now be a total of 13 weight classes in mixed martial arts.
The new weight classes will be:
165 pounds (super lightweight)
175 pounds (super welterweight)
195 pounds (super middleweight)
225 pounds (cruiserweight)
The use of these weight classes however is up to the individual organization or promotion. No promotion is required to adopt all the classes.
Officials state that the adoption of the new weight classes is not to water down the sport or the divisions. The premise is fighter safety and to reduce incidents during weight cutting.
The vote was cast at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.
