Nina Nunes vs Cynthia Calvillo removed from UFC Vegas 58, fight to be rescheduled

Saturday’s UFC Vegas 58 event has taken a hit just hours before the event was set to begin. A flyweight fight between Nina Nunes and Cynthia Calvillo has been removed from the event after Nunes had to withdraw from the fight due to catching a stomach bug just hours before the fight.

The fight had been set to be Nunes’ jump up from the strawweight division to flyweight, taking on the 11th-ranked Calvillo, who had an opportunity to jump into the Top 10 rankings if she were to defeat Nunes. Posting to her official Instagram page, Nunes announced her removal from the fight but also noted that both sides are already working with the UFC to reschedule the fight in the near future.

“Hey everyone, I had an amazing camp and the best weight cut yet. Unfortunately I picked up a stomach virus and have been sick since right after weigh ins. I tried as much as I could to make this better and still be able to fight. Sadly it has taken a tear on my body and I won’t be able to perform tonight. Sorry to my opponent. We are looking to reschedule the fight in the near future. Thank you.” (@ninaansaroff Instagram)

Not only was Nina Nunes prepared to make her flyweight division debut, but she was also looking to snap a two-fight skid in which she lost to Mackenzie Dern and Tatiana Suarez. The fight was also set to be the first of the year for Nunes, who had her most recent booking against Amanda Lemos cancelled in December of last year.

Cynthia Calvillo was also looking to get back into the win column as she is currently riding a three-fight losing skid herself, but still remained inside the Top-15 division rankings. With the removal of this fight, UFC  Vegas 58 will proceed with 11 fights on the card.
