ONE: Dangal results (Arjan Bhullar captures ONE heavyweight gold)

ONE Championship returned Saturday with ONE: Dangal. This is a tape-delayed event from the Singapore Indoor Stadium that showcased the very best of India’s combat expression. The event featured the ONE Super Series debut of a standup savant. Plus, four riveting mixed martial arts contests including a clash for the ONE Championship world heavyweight title.

In the main event, Arjan Bhullar unseated longtime heavyweight king Brandon The Truth Vera. Singh captures the ONE heavyweight world title. In the process becoming the first Indian Mixed Martial Arts World Champion in the sport’s history.

Bhullar measured ou Vera in the first round, looking to piece together combinations to set up a takedown. Arjan Bhullar stifled Vera with feints and strikes. He froze the title holder on his feet and made him unsure about engaging. Bhullar took Vera to the mat toward the end of the opening frame and controlled him thereafter.

In the second round, Bhullar capitalized on his feints and was catching The Truth with an overhand right. This sent Vera reeling toward the Circle Wall. A few more right hands compounded the damage and a thudding body shot had Vera gasping for air. Singh was able to close the distance and latch onto the defending World Champion. He sunk in a body lock, it signaled the beginning of the end for Vera. Arjan Bhullar brought Brandon Vera to the canvas once more and pounded him out for the technical knockout victory.

Muay Thai action and Atomweight upset

Muay Thai phenom Tawanchai PK.Saenchai Muaythaigym made his promotional debut in the co-feature. He outclassed former WBC Muay Thai World Champion Sean Clancy to win by KO in the final frame. Tawanchai attacked with a furious offense that included leaping elbows, sharp punching accuracy, and his vaunted left kick. A left hand dropped Clancy in the first round, but the Irish pugilist was able to compose himself afterwards. In the third round, a solid left roundhouse kick to the jaw ended the contest in lightning-quick fashion.

In a women’s atomweight prizefight, divisional fixture Bi Nguyen took home the polarizing split decision victory over grinding wrestler Ritu The Indian Tigress Phogat.

Number four-ranked women’s strawweight contender Ayaka Miura made quick work of Rayane Bastos. She submitted Bastos in the first frame of a catchweight contest with her nuanced scarf hold game.

Finally in the event’s opener, Gurdarshan Mangat overcame a spirited effort in the first round from rising star Roshan Mainam. Mangat took over the subsequent rounds and won by unanimous decision.
