Pam Sorenson at home with Bellator MMA, ready to become champion again

While taking time away to focus on her health, Pam Sorenson knew she also wanted more. As she worked to get to where she is today, feeling the best she has ever felt, she now has a new home with Bellator MMA. The former Invicta FC featherweight champion asked for her release from the promotion which has had some difficulties putting on events during the COVID-19 pandemic, and shortly after the release was granted, she signed with her new promotion.

Following that signing, Sorenson put the entire Bellator women’s featherweight division, including champion Cris Cyborg, on notice. After the news of her signing became public, the message was clear: Pam Sorenson is home and where she belongs.

Ahead of her fight against Roberta Samad at Bellator 264 this weekend, Pam Sorenson spoke with MyMMANews about the transition process to Bellator, being a part of a very talented and deep division, and why she can’t wait to prove others wrong and add another title to her resume.

After requesting her release from Invicta FC, Sorenson said the process was smooth and simple for her, and she left the promotion on good terms with herself and President Shannon Knapp.

“It was actually really easy, Shannon over at Invicta, she’s all about her fighters. She realized she just couldn’t keep me busy. There wasn’t a whole lot of featherweights left there who had more than a handful of fights. So we went to her and asked for a release and she said ‘Of course. I understand completely, go do what you need to do for you.”

Coming into a division headlined by Cris Cyborg and top contenders such as Leslie Smith, Cat Zingano, Arlene Blencowe, and many others, Pam Sorenson feels this is the place to be for any female featherweight fighter.

“This is definitely the place to be. That other promotion [UFC] they have like two, three, actual featherweights and the rest bounce back and forth between bantamweight and featherweight, and I don’t even know if they want to. This is definitely the place to be, I loved my time at Invicta but most of the veterans, the girls who have a lot of fights at featherweight, this is where they are, so this is where I want to be.”

Not only did the COVID-19 pandemic put things to a halt for many fighters, but Sorenson also took time to get herself completely healthy after undergoing a couple of different surgeries.

“Overall, I feel great. The time off the pandemic kind of forced was kind of a blessing in disguise because we got everything kind of under control. I feel better than I have in a very, very long time. So I feel I’m going to be the best version of myself, and that makes me excited.”

Coming into Bellator MMA’s featherweight division also means the talk of champion Cris Cyborg will always come up, and now that they’re in the same promotion and division, Pam Sorenson is still pursuing that fight, for obvious reasons, including adding another title to her resume.

“I’ve wanted to fight her [Cyborg] for a very long time. She’s even said openly that she wants to fight me as well. I hate to say it, but kind of out of spite out of the President of that other promotion [UFC], he made some comments I wasn’t too happy about when it came to Cyborg mentioning that she wanted to fight me. Other than wanting to fight the best, be the best, and be the champion in Bellator, kind of another motivator is I’d kind of like to throw that back in his face.”

As she prepares to make her Bellator MMA debut Pam Sorenson is letting Cris Cyborg, the featherweight division, and any of her doubters know one thing, she’s home, and she’s ready for more gold.
