Pedro Munhoz snaps Chris Gutierrez’ eight-fight unbeaten streak at UFC on ESPN 44

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, April 15, 2023, for UFC on ESPN 44, going down live from the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

Headlining the event is a matchup of featherweight contenders, as former champion Max Holloway (23-7) faces no. 4 ranked Arnold Allen (19-1) in the main event of the evening.

Co-headlining the event is also a featherweight contest, this one between coming Edson Barboza (22-11) and Billy Quarantillo (17-4).

Our second bout that went down on the main card tonight came in the bantamweight division between Pedro Munhoz (19-7, 1 NC) and Chris Gutierrez (19-4-2).

Following a 7-1 span from 2016 to 2019, Munhoz had since gone 1-4-0-1 over his last six outings, while Gutierrez had gone 7-0-1 over his last eight since losing his UFC debut in 2018.

Continue reading to see how this bantamweight contest went down:

Official Result: Pedro Munhoz def. Chris Guiterrez via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Munhoz shows off his solid boxing early on, as he drops Gutierrez two minutes in with a nasty hook early on. He then gains top position and remains in Gutierrez’ guard for two or so minutes until they’re back to their feet. Munhoz continues to land solid punches until the buzzer but did get caught with a couple counters late in the round.

The second round was much closer, with each man having success on the feet, though neither of them did anything that really stood out. Gutierrez is out-striking Munhoz slightly, but each man does a good job with their hands, as well as with landing their leg kicks in the second.

Gutierrez’ biggest problem in this fight is that he rarely threw more than one strike at a time, and Munhoz just didn’t give him space to really get his kicks off.

Pedro Munhoz got back to his winning ways tonight at UFC on ESPN 44 following a three-fight winless skid as he snaps the eight-fight unbeaten streak of Chris Gutierrez.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
