Renato Moicano remains at lightweight, set to battle Magomed Mustafaev in October

Renato Moicano will remain at lightweight.

The former featherweight contender moved up to 155-pounds this past March at UFC Brasilia. There, he made quick work of Damir Hadzovic, as he earned a submission win in just 44 seconds. Following the win, the Brazilian hoped to fight a ranked opponent given he was top-10 at 145-pounds, or get a big name in Anthony Pettis. Unfortunately, neither of his wishes will come to fruition.

According to Brazilian outlet, Combate, Moicano is set to take on Magomed Mustafaev at lightweight on October 17.

Renato Moicano snapped his two-fight losing streak with the win over Hadzovic last time out. Before that, he suffered a first-round knockout loss to Korean Zombie in the main event of UFC Greenville. The loss was his second in a row after Jose Aldo beat him by second-round TKO, where if Moicano won, he would’ve earned a title shot.

The 31-year-old has notable wins over the likes of Jeremy Stephens, Calvin Kattar, Cub Swanson, and Zubaira Tukhugov.

Magomed Mustafaev, meanwhile, is coming off a split decision loss to Brad Riddell in February. Before that, the Russian scored a knockout win over Rafael Fiziev in his return to the Octagon after a three-year layoff following a submission loss to Kevin Lee.

There is no question this scrap between Renato Moicano and Magomed Mustafaev has all the capabilities of being the Fight of the Night. If Moicano wins, it is likely he will earn a ranked opponent next.

Currently, the event has no location, but many have hinted that the month of October will be on Fight Island.

The October 17 card is as follows:

Brian Ortega vs. Korean Zombie
Jessica Eye vs. Jessica Andrade
Modestas Bukauskas vs. Jimmy Crute
Claudio Silva vs. Muslim Salikhov
Renato Moicano vs Magomed Mustafaev
Gillian Robertson vs. Poliana Botelho
Jun Yong Park vs. John Phillips
