Robert Whittaker outlasts Jared Cannonier in unanimous decision win

The reigning UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov is back at UFC 254 tonight, Saturday, Oct. 24.

He is set to defend his title against the current interim UFC lightweight champion Justin Gaethje in the event’s headliner in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. The evening’s co-main event is between former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker welcomes the surging Jared Cannonier.

Former middleweight title challenger, Robert Whittaker was previously on a tear in the middleweight division. Before his title opportunity fell short at the hands of the current champ, Israel Adesanya, the Australian middleweight was on a 9 fight winning streak.

Following a win over Darren Till in July, We’ll see if the former title contender can get back to his consistent winning ways.

Jared Cannonier enters this fight, currently on a 3 fight win streak. He holds significant wins over UFC former middleweight champion and legend, Anderson Silva. In his outing, Cannonier decimated Jack Hermansson via KO.

This will be Cannonier’s first bout in 2020. His bout with Hermansson was in September of 2019. We’ll see if the ring rust is a factor, or if he continues his winning streak to 4.

Round 1: Whitaker is looking to dictate the pace by flicking out a jab. Both fighters are looking to gauge distance. Cannonier lands a leg kick that drops Whitaker. Whitaker bounces back up. Cannonier overthrows a head kick and slips. Whitaker is maintaining distance with his hands leading the action, missing with ahead kicks. Another head kick from Whitaker. The two meet in the middle to landing hard. Whitaker lands a right, wobbling Cannonier. Cannonier is landing heavy low kicks. Whitaker can beat him to the punch while the fighters play tit for tat. Another head kick from Whittaker in the last 10 seconds and the round closes.

Round 2: Whitaker fires with a straight right. Whittaker following with a triple jab to work his way inside. Whittaker continues following with heavy punches leading into head kicks. The fighters get into an exchange, slugging and trading back and forth. Whitaker is landing the better of the exchange and he picks up the pressure at the end of the round. Whitaker begins picking up his pace, popping in and out. Whitaker ends the round landing crisp. Whitaker able to pick up pace popping in and out, landing crisped.

Round 3: An early right hand from Whittaker lands early. He follows with a teep kick and picks up his jab. He is picking up his jabs early and drops Cannonier. Whitaker advances positions and secured back control. Cannonier makes his way back up. The fighters share their fair back and forth striking attempts. Cannonier attempts a head kick. The fighters get back to the scrap, training back and forth to close the round.
