Robert Whittaker says he owes Australia a fight

Robert Whittaker has not had the best of luck in making the walk to Octagon in Australia. Of course at UFC 234, he was set to take on Kelvin Gastelum but the morning of the fights he was rushed to the hospital and the fight was off.

Now, however, he will take on Israel Adesanya in the main event of UFC 243 in Australia. Which, he says he owes them a show.

“I feel I owe the Melbourne crowd a show, and to be able to come back on a grander scale, with a more anticipated fight, this makes me ecstatic,” Whittaker said at a pre-fight press conference. “I really do look forward to making UFC history and just bringing the biggest event in combat sports to this side of the world.

“100 percent, I feel Melbourne is owed a show – and I intend to bring it.”

He also mentions that he feels great and will make it to the Octagon. When he does, Robert Whittaker will fight at Marvel Stadium in what could break the record for most people at a UFC event. So, he says it is better that he can make history in Australia.

“We are coming back to Australia at a bigger venue,” Whittaker said. “We have a chance to make UFC history, and it’s all kept down in this part of the world. It’s one of the most anticipated fights. I think it’ll be the biggest event in combat sports for this part of the world, and I really look forward to the growth of the sport after this – for the sport itself and for the athletes, more importantly.”

Regardless, the hope is that Robert Whittaker and Israel Adesanya will take place and it will be a massive fight for the UFC. All the champ hopes for is putting on a show for the Australian crowd.
