UFC Icon Georges St-Pierre Retires

Georges St-Pierre raises his hands to the crowd before stepping into the octagon.

Rory MacDonald says Georges St-Pierre is still training

Back in late February, MMA legend, Georges St-Pierre announced his retirement from the sport after a potential fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov could not come to fruition. Ultimately, many still think St-Pierre may return for the right fight, which could be against Nurmagomedov or possibly against Ben Askren.

Know for sure, St-Pierre is still training, this according to his training partner and Bellator welterweight champion, Rory MacDonald said.

“He’s [St-Pierre] still training, he’s still improving. He’s living life, he’s good, but he’s doing all the same hard training,” the Tristar staple told TSN (via Bloody Elbow). Like, I’m training hard for a fight, and I’ll show up at the track to do sprints, and he shows up half an hour later to do his work. So it’s like, the guy doesn’t slow down. He’s programmed for physical improvement. He’s still gaining. Even though he’s got no competition to look forward to, he’s working hard.”

That leaves the question on whether or not St-Pierre is still training because he loves it, or if he has interest in returning to the Octagon at some point. One thing is for sure, is that St-Pierre left the USADA drug testing pool which to many signals a retirement for good.

In his legendary career, St-Pierre became a UFC champion in both the welterweight and middleweight division. He was the champion at welterweight for years before stepping away from the Octagon. Then, at UFC 217, he returned to take on Michael Bisping where St-Pierre beat Bisping by submission to win the middleweight title.

St-Pierre is considered one of the greatest to ever do it, if not the best to ever do it.

For now, he will continue to train as MacDonald says, but the door still could possibly be open to him returning down the line if the fight is good for his legacy.
