Sean O’Malley explains why he has superior striking to Aljamain Sterling
Top-ranked title contender Sean O’Malley explains why he has superior striking to UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling.
After defeating Petr Yan last year, O’Malley was told he would be next in line to fight for the UFC bantamweight title. Of course, the UFC gave former champion Henry Cejudo the chance first, but he came up short with a split decision loss to Sterling. Now, O’Malley will finally get his shot next.
While a Sterling vs. O’Malley fight likely favors the champion, who is the superior grappler in every possible way, O’Malley of course has a path to victory if he is able to keep this fight standing as he is the more effective striker. Speaking to told The Schmo in a recent interview, O’Malley broke down the striking matchup between him and Sterling. While “Suga” admitted that Sterling has an awkward striking style that is effective in MMA, he truly believes he will go out there and KO Sterling quickly.
“I am a sniper. Aljo walks forward, and his awkwardness is effective in MMA. You’ve got to give it to him because you watch him strike and you’re like, ‘What the hell is he doing?’ But look what he’s done. So, his awkwardness is effective, but I think it’ll be the downfall of him because I am a sniper,” said O’Malley (via MMAjunkie.com).
“You can’t walk forward like that with me and cross your feet with your chin in the air because I will find it, and I will find it often. I’m not saying I’m gonna go out there and one-shot him, put his lights out in the first. I just believe that I will hit him over and over and over again to where he will fall.”
