Shogun Rua wins trilogy fight against Antonio Rogerio Nogueira

Shogun Rua defeats Antonio Rogerio Nogueira by split decision in Nogueira’s final fight of his career

The UFC’s last fight card from “Fight Island” before heading back to U.S. soil is a big one with seven fights on the main card.

The main event will feature two top middleweight contenders in former champion Robert Whittaker and former welterweight title challenger Darren Till.

This card also features former champions in Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, Fabricio Werdum and Carla Esparza.

In the co-main event the UFC is putting on a super rare trilogy fight between Rua and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. The rarity comes as Rua already holds to victories over Nogueira. This will be the final fight of Nogueira’s career.

Rua (26-11) comes into the with a 4-1-1 record in his past six bouts. His last outing came in November when he fought to a draw with Paul Craig.

Nogueira (23-9) last fought at UFC 237 in May 2019. He was knocked out in that fight by Ryan Spann. He did win his fight before that against Sam Alvey in September 2018.

Here’s how their right went down with a round-by-round breakdown and scoring.

Round 1

Shogun Rua lands the first strike of the fight, A leg kick with just over four minutes left in the round. He lands another one a few seconds later.

90 seconds into the fight, Rua goes to the clinch and pushes Nogueira’s back against the fence. Shogun throwing knees from the clinch.

The two disengage with two and half minutes left.

Nogueira lands a nice left hook, but Shogun comes forward and lands a few shots himself. A few moments later and Nogueira lands again.

One minute left in the found and the two are starting to swing and Rua is landing clear until Nogueira lands a bomb that sends Rua on retreat. As Nogueira comes forward smelling blood, Rua scores a takedown as the round comes to a close.

Crazy final minute.

Round 2

The two clinch to start the second-round, but they aren’t engaged long. Shogun lands a loud powerful leg kick following the clinch.

Now here comes the offense. The two are starting to throw in the middle of the octagon. Both are landing and Nogueira charges in a puts Rua right on his back with three minutes to work.

Nogueira stuffs a takedown attempt. Rua lands a few punches.

Final minute of the round and Rua scores some leg kicks. Nogueira throws some heavy punches. Nothing really lands for Nogueira, but he’s busy with the heavy shots.

Final round in Nogueira’s career. Rua lands a powerful leg kick.

Both men throwing. Rua landing more, but his eye is looks bad with a lot of swelling.

Rua is controlling the center of the octagon and scores with another kick. Rua now lands a nice hook.

Nogueira lands a left hand and then lands another two times. Rua to the legs again.

Rua scores another takedown in final minute. He remains on top, lands a few strikes and rides out the final minute to give him the win.
