Stephen Thompson calls out Leon Edwards in “Wonderboy” fashion
Although the “BMF” title rematch between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz is still up in the air, Stephen Thompson is suggesting something completely different.
Embracing his title as ‘NMF’ [‘Nicest Mother (Expletive)’], the former welterweight title challenger called out Leon Edwards via Twitter on Tuesday Sept. 22. Thompson is known for respecting his opponents, but even “Wonderboy” decided to call out the Englishman.
Let’s not get carried away, he did it nicely.
“All due respect @Leon_edwardsmma, which I have a lot of for you, I have been saying I would like to fight you for a while now!” Thompson posted. “It makes sense and would be a great match up. I think that was my first Twitter call out ever. Man that felt weird. #FirstTimeForEverything.”

Stephen Thompson is coming up on close to a year removed from entering the octagon. He most recently earned a unanimous-decision nod against Vicente Luque at UFC 244 in November 2019.
The win ended a two-fight losing streak to Anthony Pettis and Darren Till for the 37-year-old.
Edwards has not competed in over a year, despite riding an eight-fight win streak. In his last outing, Edwards beat former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos via unanimous decision at UFC on ESPN 4 in July 2019.
Edwards remains in the top of the UFC welterweight rankings, but is struggling to book fights with other top-five contenders. With Thompson pegged at No. 6, “Wonderboy” may be onto something with his proposal.
