Stephen Thompson vs. Michel Pereira eyed for UFC 289
Stephen Thompson will look to make it two in a row.
According to MMA Sucka, Thompson is set to take on Michel Pereira at UFC 289 on June 10. The event will likely take place in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with the main event of the card not being announced. This is also a fight both men have called for as before Thompson’s last scrap at UFC Orlando, he mentioned Pereira as a possible next opponent for him. The main event of the card has also not been announced.
Stephen Thompson (17-6-1) snapped his two-fight losing skid last time out as he scored a fourth-round stoppage over Kevin Holland as Holland’s corner stopped the fight before the fifth round as Holland had broke his hand. Yet, Thompson was winning the scrap before the stoppage and was well on his way to winning.
Thompson is currently ranked seventh at welterweight and before the win over Holland, he suffered back-to-back decision losses to Belal Muhammad and Gilbert Burns. The losses happened after he had picked up decision victories over Geoff Neal and Vicente Luque. In his career, the two-time welterweight title challenger holds notable wins over Jorge Masvidal, Rory MacDonald, and Robert Whittaker among others.
Michel Pereira (28-11 and two No Contests) is riding a five-fight win streak and is coming off the biggest win of his career as he beat Santiago Ponzinibbio by split decision back in May of 2022. To kick off his UFC tenure, Pereira knocked out Danny Roberts before being upset by Tristan Connelly and then suffered a DQ loss to Diego Sanchez. Since losing two in a row, he picked up five in a row and also beat the likes of Khaos Williams and Niko Price on the win streak. The Brazilian is also ranked 15th at welterweight.
