Teofimo Lopez on crying when receiving The Ring Magazine belt

Teofimo Lopez compliments Jake and Logan Paul, but says fans will see “real boxing” on June 19

As brothers, Jake and Logan Paul have stolen the headlines and spotlight in the world of combat sports since their boxing careers have begun, not everyone is against their inclusion into the sport. Following Logan Paul’s exhibition match against Floyd Mayweather, most of the talk has been about what’s next for both brother insides the boxing ring, as well as criticism, and surprisingly some praise from the likes of the unified lightweight champion, Teofimo Lopez.

There have not been many in the fight game who are willing to compliment the former YouTube stars turned professional boxers but Teofimo Lopez had a surprisingly different take than most in the sport. On Monday while making an appearance on ‘MMA Today’ on Sirius XM’s Fight Nation, Lopez was asked about his thoughts on the Paul brothers and believes they bring the excitement that boxing needs.

“Overall I think that sport needs some type of excitement and I think that the Paul brothers are just trying to bring something into it.”

Lopez would continue on to say that he believes the Paul brothers just have a love for the sport and that fights like Mayweather vs Conor McGregor are what opened the door for the social media stars to begin their boxing careers.

“They may be just big boxing fans and they probably love the sport, and they just want to get in it, at the same time they’re making money for it. I think all that changed when we had Mayweather-McGregor happen, that’s when the boxing world changed and the MMA scene changed.”

The unified lightweight champion might not be against Jake and Logan Paul being involved in boxing, but he went on to say that fans will be treated to real boxing on June 19 when he defends his titles against George Kambosos Jr.

“For myself I think that it’s great, it’s entertainment, it was an exhibition that they had, and it’s all about just trying to give the people what they want to see. In reality man, come June 19, you guys are gonna see real boxing.”

Teofimo Lopez is not alone in big names complimenting the Paul brothers, as former UFC champion Anthony Pettis also recently paid respect to Jake Paul, who is set to face his teammate, Tyron Woodley later this year.

Although there have been mixed reviews on both Paul brothers getting into boxing, when names like Lopez are paying compliments to them, it’s worth noting, while also hoping that boxing fans will start to give the same attention to Lopez, as they do the YouTube stars turned boxers.
