Tito Ortiz talks potential fight with Cain Velasquez in Combate Americas
Tito Ortiz is set to make his Combate Americas debut on Dec. 7 against former WWE superstar Alberto El Patron.
The two have been a heated rivalry in the lead up to the fight, but Ortiz is looking at another fight in the promotion. That is against current WWE star and former UFC heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez.
Speaking to Shakiel Mahjouri of Bloody Elbow Ortiz said he signed a three-fight deal and Combate Americas CEO Campbell MacLaren has talked to Velasquez about the potential fight.
“It’s not a one and done deal with Combate. I signed a three-fight, two-year contract with them. So there will be a fight after,” Ortiz said (via MMA News). “Campbell [McLaren] actually talked to Cain Velasquez and he said he’d like the winner of this. If Cain Velasquez can get to 205, I’m in. If he can make it to 210 I’m in.”
Whether or not Cain Velasquez has any interest in a Tito Ortiz fight at all or can make 210 pounds is to be seen.
Velasquez recently retired from MMA where he seemed happy doing so.
“As of right now, the chapter’s closed on my MMA career,” Velasquez told reporters following the press conference. “I’m focusing on the task at hand with the WWE. I love this sport. I’ve kind of rebirthed myself in reliving it and loving it again. I’m all in and doing this. I’m diving deep into this and this is what I’m doing right now.”
Tito Ortiz, meanwhile, last fought in 2018 when he took on Chuck Liddell in Golden Boy promotions for the third time. There, he knocked out the “Iceman” in the first round to earn his first win over his longtime rival.
In order for this possible Velasquez-Ortiz fight to happen, Ortiz must beat El Patron on Dec. 7, which many expect him to do.
