Tyler DeLorenzo: Cant’ wait to wrestle at States, let it all fly out there on the mat
Tyler DeLorenzo wrestles for East Stroudsburg South High School in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, where he is currently a fulfilling his Junior year. He began the season wrestling in the 182 pound weight class, working his way down to 160 where he recently found tremendous success.
“I took the whole summer off to get away from wrestling and worked a little as a lifeguard. It was three months straight of no wrestling or practice. Let’s just say I got a little chubby over that time and needed to lose the weight. Now at 160 I feel strong and ready to battle anyone,” he said.
DeLorenzo has been wrestling eight years, beginning in the fourth grade, never placing in a regional tournament before; that was until things changed for him this year.
The East Stroudsburg Cavalier started the post season at the District 11 tournment with a record of 23-2 and a fifth seed positioning in the bracket. During the 2014-2015 season DeLorenzo placed sixth in districts but unfortunately only the top five advance to Regionals.
This year the 16-year old went 5-1 at Districts to take 3rd place, qualifying himself for the Pennsylvania Northeast Regional tournament. His record was then improved to 28-3.
“It feels exciting to know that I’m doing somewhat of the right thing, and it pays off. I can’t wait to wrestle this weekend and let it all fly out there on the mat,” DeLorenzo said.
He won his first match at Regionals with an 8-1 decision over Jeremy Aquino of Hazelton which then put him in position to wrestle District 12 champ Garrit Rescioli (30-1) of central HS.
DeLorenzo defeated Rescioli with a 6-4 decision. Beating Rescioli put him into the Semi-Finals against District 2 Champ Steven Newell (36-3) of Dallas Area HS. DeLorenzo defeated Newell in the Ultimate Tie Breaker (4th overtime) with a score of 2-1.
The win catapulted him into the the Northeast Regional Finals against the District 11 Champ Cade Wilson (28-11) of Nazareth.
“Taking time off from wrestling definitely made me aware of why I like it so much. I came into the season hungry and looking forward to practice every single day. I have worked ten times as hard this year than I’ve ever worked before,” he said.
DeLorenzo will wrestle in the Pennsylvania State Championship Tournament this week. The 2017 PIAA Class AAA Wrestling Championships will be held at the Giant Center in Hershey, PA, March 9-11.
