UFC 211 Results: Miocic vs. Dos Santos 2 From Dallas, Texas

UFC 211 kicked off tonight night in Dallas, Texas, headlined by a heavyweight title bout between champion Stipe Miocic and challenger Junior dos Santos.  The fight is a rematch from their epic war in December 2014 in which Dos Santos got the unanimous decision nod on the judges’ scorecard. Miocic was sustaining damage early in the first round from kicks.  His shin and calf area swelled immediately but Miocic pressed forward and TKO’d his opponent, the former champion to settle the score inside the first round.

Also, women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk defended her title against Jessica Andrade.  This was the champion’s fifth title defense.  Jedrzejczyk had a rough outing in the first round, suffering a large hematoma on her forehead but Joanna came back and dominated the rest of the fight in every aspect to score even a 50-44 on one judges scorecard.  Joanna retained her title yet again.

After the fight, Andrade asked her girlfriend to marry her, to which she gave the thumbs up.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace Demian Maia went to a split decision against Jorge Masvidal in what was a UFC welterweight title shot eliminator contest.  Maia went over to UFC President Dana White after the fight and said he wanted his shot, to which White granted his wish.

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar put an absolute beating on the rising Mexican star Yair Rodriguez. By the end of round 1, Rodriguez’s eyes was completely swollen shut and bloodied.  In round two, Rodriguez came to life and had the former champion in trouble with a kneebar but Edgar worked through it and continued the ground and pound.  The fight was eventually called between rounds two and three as Rodriguez’s eye was too badly bruised.

During the broadcast it was announced that longtime UFC matchmaker Joe Silva will be inducted in the UFC Hall of Fame.

Former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez had his hands full against Dustin ‘Diamond’ Poirier getting battered and bloodied before turning the fight around and doing the same to Poirier.  Alvarez then threw some knees which he believed to be legal but they were in fact illegal and referee Herb Dean had doctors look at Poirier who said he could not continue.  Dean then said that he believes that Alvarez did not know the knees were illegal so he declared the fight a ‘no contest.’

The card promised to be one of the best fight cards of the year.  Even after losing the Sergio Pettis vs. Henry Cejudo fight earlier this week, UFC 211 is stacked from start to finish.  Then yesterday, newly signed UFC fighter Jared “Flash” Gordon was removed after suffering food poisoning like symptoms.  He was to take on Michel Quinones at featherweight.

One of the best heavyweight fights to ever take place in the octagon took place between unlikely candidates Chase Sherman and Rashad Coulter.  These two big boys threw bombs, rocked each other on multiple occasions, and just kept moving forward.  Very exciting brawl.
