UFC 250 results – Cody Stamann emotional in win over Brian Kelleher
On the heels of his second round submission win over Hunter Azure at UFC Jacksonsville just a few short weeks ago, Brian “Boom” Kelleher (21-10) returned to the octagon to meet rising featherweight star Cody Stamann (18-2-1).
Kelleher looked to make it three in row, adding to the win over Azure and a January submission win over Ode Osbourne.
“Spartan” Stamann entered the octagon with purpose after seeing his last outing against Yadong Song go to a majority draw. After 15-minute full minutes of action, in a hard-fought fight, no man left as a declared winner, something Stamann never wants to experience again.
Stamann also endured a great deal of emotion while preparing for this bout as he recently lost his 18-year-old brother. Tonight, after a hard fought victory over Kelleher, Stamann released those tears and emotions.
The fight, while all three judges scored in favor of Stamann, was pretty close. Throughout all three rounds, Stamann produced the higher volume in significant strikes, but Kelleher was not far behind.
Kelleher would throw, and while he did land often, Stamann was able to maneuver and avoid many of the big shots.
The second frame was where Stamann assured his win by getting Kelleher to the canvas and keeping him there for a great deal of the round.
Kelleher came on hard in the final seconds of the fight but it was too little too late. After the fight’s conclusion, the two men embraced and Kelleher was certain that he had been defeated but congratulated and consoled his opponent who burst into tears.
All three judges award the fight to Cody Stamann (30-27).
